ONC report says success of AI in healthcare hinges on good data

Without access to high-quality, reliable data, artificial intelligence will not fulfill its promise to help shape the future of public health, community health and healthcare delivery, according to a new report by JASON.

The study, "Artificial Intelligence for Health and Health Care," focuses on the technical capabilities, limitations and applications for AI in healthcare that can be realized in within the next 10 years. It says that while the availability of digital health data could allow for AI functionality in clinical practice, the quality of existing data remains a problem.

According to the study, society has been primed and the time is ripe for AI’s use in healthcare thanks to three forces:

  1. Frustration with the existing–or legacy–medical systems among patients and health professionals.
  2. Ubiquity of networked smart devices in society.
  3. Comfort with at-home services like those provided through Amazon and other technology companies.

In addition, the study offers recommendations for next steps that could accelerate the use of AI in and out of the clinical setting. They include understanding AI’s limitation in the arenas of health and healthcare. To read the full report, click here.

The study was commissioned by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (ARHQ), with support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. JASON is an independent group of scientists and academics that has been advising the federal government on science and technology issues for more than 50 years.

We at LUMEDX are thrilled with the promise AI has shown to improve the overall quality of healthcare and committed to helping hospitals gather and analyze the kind of high-quality cardiovascular data needed to get better outcomes at lower costs. To this end, LUMEDX recently released the new HealthView Analytics and is currently piloting embedded workflow analytics.
